What

Established in 2017 at the impetus of Recytyre, the management company for end of life tyres in Belgium, and in association with the King Baudouin Foundation, the Green.er fund works towards the diversification of the sales outlets for raw materials derived from the recycling of used tyres in Belgium.

Setting out from the finding that Belgium fails to muster sufficient development and innovation drive in the recycling market for old tyres, Green.er is looking to support local projects which contributes towards the eco-friendly and sustainable processing of these tyres and to examine the potential use of these secondary raw materials and/or to promote their use in practice.

In doing so, the fund focuses its attentions both on the world of academia and the world of trade and industry. The fund supports innovative projects, linked to the rubber industry, which have a potentially positive impact on employment and deliver distinct added value for the recycling sector, with the aim of ensuring optimum integration into circular thinking.

Both existing businesses, as well as start-ups, higher education institutions and spin-offs which aspire to take on this type of initiatives may be eligible for financial support from Green.er.

The fund’s start-up capital is 3.5 million euros.

Projects

RUBBERGREENCYCLE

Owner: RubberGreen, Rue de la Sucrerie 10, 7080 Frameries

Responsible: Olivier Prud’Homme, CEO Rubbergreen

Objective: Industrialisation of a process of devulcanisation and revulcanisation of rubber waste resulting from the recycling of aircraft or trucks tires, to realise technical parts with strong mechanical properties (traction, tearing, wear, fatigue) and high antivibration performances for railway applications

Start: July 2018

Estimated term: June 2020

Partners: University of Twente (NL)

VALPREMA-3D

Owner: Materianova, Avenue Nicolas Copernic 3, 7000 Mons

Responsible: Fouad Laoutid

Objective: Development of composite polymer materials based on used tires (all types), through 3-D printing technology. The aim is to develop efficient technical materials from these wastes while exploiting their good damping properties (anti-shock), sound insulation and flexibility

Start: February 2019

Estimated term: January 2021

Partners: University of Mons

RUBOST

Owner: Belgian Road Research Centre (BRRC), Fokkersdreef 21, 1933 Zaventem

Responsible: Annick De Swaef (CEO), Elia Boonen (Researcher)

Objective: Checking the applicability of rubber granulate from waste tires in concrete guide constructions (safety impact belts), to replace a part of the fine (sand) or coarse (crushed stone) granulates in the concrete composition, possibly in combination with recycled steel fibers from waste tires

Start: February 2019

Estimated term: January 2022

Partners: Rubber Recycling Overpelt, Colas Belgium

RUBSONIK

Owner: Belgian Road Research Centre (BRRC), Fokkersdreef 21, 1933 Zaventem
